Set Us Aflame

The English is a bit stiff in this prayer, but it is beautiful nonetheless.
No sanctity is there therefore, if Thou, O Lord, withdraw Thine hand.  No wisdom availeth, if Thou cease to guide.  No courage helpeth, if Thou leave off to preserve.  No chastity is secure, if Thou do not protect it.  No custody of our own availeth, if They sacred watchfulness be not present.  For, left to ourselves, we sink and perish; but being visited of Thee, we are raised up and live.  Unstable truly are we, but through Three we are strengthened; we wax lukewarm but by Thee we are inflamed. ~ Thomas a Kempis, Of the Imitation of Christ.
